About

The IRRF was established in 2012 as a multimillion dollar partnership between the University of Alberta, Alberta Transportation, Alberta Recycling, and The City of Edmonton with funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Alberta Innovation and Advanced Education. Since then, IRRF faculty and staff at the University of Alberta have been working closely with partners to lead cutting-edge research in road design and construction.

Pairing its access to one-of-a-kind facilities with experts from both industry and academia, the IRRF spearheads a number of innovative projects to advance the knowledge of roadway engineering. Through the pursuit of sustainable construction solutions, our researchers are providing the transportation industry with valuable insight into environmentally-friendly alternatives and cold-climate considerations for roadway projects.

Explore our website to learn more about our unique facilities, including our green test road, and our pioneering research into areas such as tire-derived aggregate (TDA) road embankment fill.
